Letter to City of Oakland, California - December, 2022

In support of a resolution for masking at December 20th meeting

Mayor Schaaf or Council Member,

We are writing in support of a resolution to expand mask requirements in Oakland as proposed by Vice Mayor Kaplan on December 13th. As Oakland is now in the medium transmission level for covid and local hospitals are now about 10% full.

We support the resolution for an expanded mask requirement in the city to keep this level from rising to 25% or higher, keep people healthy, business open and prevent long term conditions, suffering and deaths. When you consider local measures, please decide on what level of infection and hospital admission the threshold will be going forward.

We ask for mask requirements for transit, all workplaces including staff at gyms, restaurants, shops, museums and offices as well as everyone attending school, events & shopping at essential shops. There should also be a requirement to limit the number of people at events and improved airflow in all public buildings throughout the city.

It is only ongoing action with a combination of measures like masking, social distancing, limits in crowded places, improved airflow, testing and vaccination that will limit the strain on healthcare, cause near zero illness in schools and allow business to open safely. These are proven measures that lower transmission of covid and all other infections transmitted through the air and on surfaces.

Thank you for addressing this urgent matter.

Regards,
