Letter for Scottish Government
25 January, 2023
We are writing to urge His Majesty's Scottish Government to put in measures and address the current coronavirus situation causing massive pressure on healthcare across Scotland.
Hospitals are at 95% capacity this month. This has never happended before in Scotland. It is a dangerous position to be in and urgent action is needed. In future, action must be taken when hospitals near 50%. Covid is a serious threat to the health of the population with a growing number developing long term conditions, many serious post infection / recovery. As well, many people who are over 50, disabled or children are at higher risk for more severe cases of covid, flu and rsv. This leads to greater hospital admissions, staff shortages and more deaths.
To tackle the situation we ask for mask requirements for all settings. At the very least on public transport, all workplaces including staff at gyms, restaurants, shops, museums and offices as well as everyone attending school, events & essential shops. There should also be a requirement to limit the number of people at events and improved airflow in all public buildings throughout Scotland. Proper not estimated testing & monitoring is needed to know what the situation in the community is and to judge how many are being infected / developing long covid.
It is only stronger ongoing action with a combination of measures like masking, social distancing, limits in crowded places, improved airflow, testing and vaccination that will limit the strain on healthcare, reduce illness in schools and allow everything to open safely. These are proven measures that lower transmission of covid and all other infections transmitted through the air and on surfaces.
We thank you for taking an important step creating a public consultation at Holyrood House for long covid. We hope this will result in better permanent measures to prevent the devastating effects of long covid. Prevention is always the best medicine!
Thank you for addressing this urgent matter.
