March 2023
Good morning,
I am writing to request the board encourage everyone to wear a mask in schools for several weeks as a safety measure after the return from the upcoming & future extended breaks. Although I know the province bans mandatory measures in schools, this is the next best option we have. We need to do something to protect all students and staff to keep them healthy and safe from covid-19 or any other virus they may have contracted during the time away from school. (e.g. travel, gatherings, shopping or events)
In America, cities including Philadelphia and Boston have put in a two week measure or policy after Christmas and summer breaks to prevent a rise in illness and transmission. As this pandemic continues, we need measures to reduce the chances of getting covid and prevent development of long term covid which leads to a wide range of conditions that cause a disability and in severe cases, a heart attack, stroke, admission to hospital or death.
Please ask everyone on school property to wear a mask for several weeks after returning from each school break. Please take this action to help students and staff safe, reduce transmission in the community and support healthcare workers.
Thank you for considering taking this important safety measure.
